Was I missing something from Joneses, this Beckett meets Albee for a new generation? Anyway, this is very clever, which is both its greatest strength and weakness. Damn Minnesota.This would have been four stars for Thom Pain itself. THEATRE. But he does. I left my seat and kept thinking of Thom at odd moments.This was a gift from my daughter. Even if the piece is based on nothing, as its subtitle proclaims, its unconventional style makes it far more interesting than many other plays that are currently on the boards.Ten years after the original production, Lyn Gardner of the Guardian wrote, "it's still one of the best monologues I've ever seen". Isn't it wonderful how we never recover?
It is based on the underside of this thing we believe we experience as Life: its pain, joy, comedy, moments of beauty and ugliness, fear and absurdity. Not a surprise. Funny and sad all at the same time.Absolutely amazing. Will Eno's play Thom Pain (based on nothing) won the First Fringe Award with its Edinbugh Festival premiere, and had acclaimed productions in London and New York. It would be great to see this performed I order to see how it really lands.I first learned of Will Eno through an interview with one of the creators of Welcome to Night Vale, and I can 100% see the similarities: the language, the rhythm/tone, the themes.

The dark and sulfurous chamber of Thom Pain’s mind has been unsealed for public inspection again. Then I saw a production of his "The Flu Season" and I got interested. Worldwide the play has appeared in Finland, France, Israel, Holland, Norway, Portugal, China, Mexico, Germany and elsewhere.The play received enthusiastic reviews.
Not what I had hoped. Michael C Hall played Thom, and despite not being a Hall fanatic, my daughter was game to go. I left my seat and kept thinking of Thom at odd moments for weeks.
