I was worried for all of us, human and canine.Andrew took the lead first. It felt good just to take off my pack and sit down for a minute. By tomcat32 in forum Trip Reports Replies: 2 Last Post: 10-28-2013, 06:45 PM.

It takes time to find your place. Hayes, the rest was just a series of small ups and downs that never had a chance to really wear us down. 65 dF throughout the day, +/- a few degrees. Hayes right as the sun was rising above the horizon, a spectacular way to start the day.Time was not a luxury we could afford on this trip, so long before we were ready we had to continue on our way. The going through this section was relatively easy, with the exception of one short boulder section that Andrew, resident AT thru-hiker, described as “just a preview of what we’ll see in the Notch.” This was another reminder of the challenges that lay ahead of us. I spun in circles as we climbed, looking at Sunday River, the Mahoosucs stretching south west, the lofty Carter and Presidential Ranges beyond those, and Kilkenny Ridge to the west. It is basically a combination of ascents and descents on the Northern Presidential Range’s steepest and most terrifying trails. This is an adventure that I’ll remember for the rest of my life, though I don’t think I’ll repeat the act of doing a winter traverse again.

I think I would love this section of trail, but I want to try it in the daytime and without snow.

Mahoosuc Range Backpacking Trip 10.24-10.26. It's not clear if there is a "standard" way to do the traverse, and the www.summitpost.org page on it says "Ask ten people what constitutes a Great Range traverse, and you'll likely get ten different answers." The Mahoosuc Range from Maine to New Hampshire, through which the Appalachian Trail traverses, is mile for mile among the most difficult sections of the entire AT. Depending upon the direction you travel it can entail up to roughly 34 miles and 12,000’+ elevation gain over some of the most difficult, strenuous terrain in the Whites.

I didn’t have the energy to yell and I was parched so I celebrated internally as we walked into the parking lot. He might be Super Pup, but even he has limits, namely rebar ladder rungs. Looking south to Carlo and Mount Success (bottom),Kyle makes his way through the steep descent off of Goose Eye,Great hiking and view just south of Mount Success,Back into the woods heading down to Austin Brook,Along the Mahoosuc Trail. This did seem to help, but then we noticed that his hands were so cold that he couldn’t move them, so that was the next problem.

I took lead breaking trail and trucked down what I thought looked like the footpath, but since there were no blazes anywhere to be found, Dan took out his GPS for the first of many times to relocate the trail. Fatigue was beginning to show through everyone’s strong exterior, but we all just put one foot in front of the other, trading the lead when necessary, and trudging onward. Having completed the NH 48 in November of 2015, I've set my goals higher, met some great new friends, and seen things that I never would have imagined, which I will attempt to encapsulate. Very long. Happens to all of us at some point, and it’s nothing that a quick infusion of sugar can’t fix. Sun and clouds throughout. with my permission. I can’t even count the number of times we lost the trail, but I wasted no time losing it for the first time.

We reached the ledges just below the summit of Mt. We all breathed a sigh of relief and had a quick snack before tackling the next barrier, Mahoosuc Arm.

A highlight of this traverse is the well-known Mahoosuc Notch, a mile-long scramble through huge boulders.https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BxhlmOmzX7P3N29rSTBySTNrTGs,https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BxhlmOmzX7P3MFZzOXZhR0J5alk,https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BxhlmOmzX7P3N1hYd0ljNVVVWlU,https://drive.google.com/open?id=1gD1tHLcF9747enT5ABMxaT_y9KivAuLI,https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BxhlmOmzX7P3OEgyc3NtekNzMzA,https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BxhlmOmzX7P3U1drR3ZXNDZBVjg,http://www.meetup.com/hvhikers/pages/HUDSON_VALLEY_HIKER_LEGAL_DISCLAIMER/. Thanks, dude. This trip takes the participants across the entire Mahoosuc range, spanning from Gorham, NH to Grafton Notch in Maine. Tell me that makes sense?

Personally, I still felt good, but it was pointed out earlier in the day that I was about anywhere from 6-16 years younger than everyone else, averaging about 10, so that could have explained it. To make it worse, this trail isn’t made up of well placed boulders and stone steps like many, it’s a nightmarish mixture of large boulders and smooth, icy slabs. Mahoosuc Range Traverse. We climbed and climbed, over icy rock, crispy scoured snow and boulders, through spruce scrub, traps, and deep drifts, all while thinking “one more step, one more…”.I turned around once, and the view really was incredible.

Today, she spends most of her time power-hiking monster treks that would bury the average day-hiker, often in fluorescent superhero costumes with her Shiba Inu companion.Any hike they take on isn’t for the faint of heart, but if you’re feeling ambitious, this is where Alton recommends taking a look.

Depending upon the direction you travel it can entail up to roughly 34 miles and 12,000’+ elevation gain over some of the most difficult, strenuous terrain in the Whites. Climbing up toward the imposing cliff face of Goose Eye in the fading twilight, the wind blowing in our faces, and seeing my great group of friends hike in front of me toward the summit was like a scene from a movie. Good post about your own Mahoosuc experience and congrats on the traverse. “We did it!” I thought.

The Carters offer more of the same, though a bit more tame, and Moriah is about where the transition begins to the boggy, wet, ledgy mountains that remind me a lot of the Mahoosuc Range (shudder).
