At that point you cross the big bridge and you're in the Pemigawasset Wilderness. Thirteen Falls and Owl’s Head Loop is a 34.4 kilometer moderately trafficked loop trail located near Lincoln, New Hampshire that features a river and is rated as difficult. I wanted to hike about 2 more miles before calling it a day and pitching camp near water. You can see the remnants of an old suspension or trestle bridge after the second river crossing along Lincoln Brook Trail. Good hike but be prepared.Did this hike in two days. Moving time shy of 6 hours, total time about 6 hours 50 minutes.Lots of space in the Lincoln woods parking lot at 6:30am ($5). Yet an even greater opportunity for hikers in the Sable Highlands remains unrealized: a long trail going to Norton Peak’s summit and continuing to nearby Haystack Mountain and Wolf Pond Mountain. And fyi, the bugs were not bad at all on this trip, although I did use bug spray a few times.Without Owls Head this is a fairly straightforward trail with a good opportunity for an overnight backpacking trip. It’s funny that a quick moment can be very special. It was a great excuse to camp out for a long weekend with one day of work sandwiched between two days of walking valley trails.IMO the height of land and the herd paths north of the slide were the crux for route finding.

After descending we continued on Lincoln Brook Trail, past several dispersed campsites (mental note for next time), then reconnected with Franconia Brook Trail and back to the car.

It’s one of those trails where you’re unlikely to see anyone when you hike it, and if you do, it’s because they’re lost.I started out at the Lincoln Woods trailhead off the Kancamagus Highway, just outside of Lincoln, NH. Some, however, required knee-deep walks through the brook and had currents strong enough to sweep the legs out from under a 190lbs person like myself. The first 8 or so miles were easy and mostly flat. For such a lowly peak, it stands to reason we have guided it multiple times. If the base of the mountain just short of the slide to the top of the mountain was a cocktail, then the first third would be an experience like South Tripyramid slide, the second third would be some wooded scramble that reminded me of the Presidentials, and the last third would be a taste of the wooded Hancock ridge. Can be on auto pilot unless it's super muddy (which we saw). All together super great route. It was her 38th 4000-footer and she was happy to have us help. I did it with a clockwise loop so there were 7 miles on my legs before Owls Head. And the site itself is a few hundred feet from the river. We had an amazing day. The first three miles are on former railroad bed, flat and dull and somewhat crowded. At that stage there are several old routes adjacent, parallel, and crossing the paths that may catch your eye. First Hellgate Brook, which starts below Mt Bond and West Bond Mountain; and then Redrock Brook, which drains a pond below Southwest Twin and Mt Guyot; and finally Twin Brook which runs between Galehead Mountain and the northwest side of Southwest Twin. Franconia Brook trail for the most part follows an old rail bed, so it is straight and wide but not super natural. Each mountain has a story and I am happy to learn it’s secrets.
We stayed overnight at Thirteen Falls Campsite which was packed. If you choose to take the bushwhacking trail coming up too, you can find it on your right; it is marked by a small cairn. Many thanks to the AMC for maintaining this site! Again, the remaining 7 miles back was quite pleasant.
That would give me about 90 minutes to get settled in and cook dinner before the sun went down.It’d been nearly 8 years since I’d hiked this section of trail and I remember hiking a portion of it in the middle of the stream adjacent to it, since the trail itself had vanished. We had a dog with us and ultimately decided it was irresponsible to allow him to continue and we backed out.
