Especially with a full pack. Some trails or park services may be closed this weekend so check with local authorities before heading out. At the end of the hike we chose from a few of the patio restaurants in town. Spent the night, woke up and did the last 3 miles down into Hot Springs. I would love to go again.This is honestly closer to 20 miles than 18. It’s very exposed and if you are caught in weather there’s no shelter. This is a steep forest trail with rock outcrops and tight switchbacks. The weekends draw a descent size crowd as there is a parking lot close by. Can be used to "Summit" Max Patch over a much more difficult route … The direct hike to the top is a gentle climb on a narrow dirt path. 360° views at the top!Went from Max Patch to Hot Springs. Would be the perfect hike in the fall when the leaves are changing colors.It’s hard to find more reward with less spend. Hiked from this shelter, 10 miles to Deer Park Mountain shelter.

Hiked to Walnut Mountain shelter. Well kept and only passed a slew of hikers hiking against me (like they all took off from the same point). The loop (in snow) was very beautiful. Stay on this road for 17.7 miles into Hot Springs. Not a difficult hike at all.Very easy hike. Max Patch is popular for winter hikes, but don’t attempt one without being sure that the roads are passable in your vehicle.The temperature can be a good 10-15 degrees cooler than in Asheville on this windy hilltop, so bring a windbreaker in addition to your camera. We will return in a warmer month to hike the area, without little ones. Length: 1.4 miles Rating: Easy Dogs: On Leash Facilities: None. Side note: the road up the mountain is gravel and kind of sucks! If your vehicle makes it- it is worth it!Amazing views! Great way to end a weekend hike.Not completed, made it to Garenelo Gap and turned back. Follow Little Creek Road (1181) for 3.5 miles (even after it turns to gravel) to the intersection with Max Patch Road (State Road 1182). We split it up to enjoy the nature of the hike more and have a full backpacking experience with camping several nights along the way. Overall a great hike with ups and downs that were killer. !Nice hike after a long gravel road drive up. The hike is super short and well maintained. Bug spray did nothing so we called it an early night and got in the tent away from the bugs.
