WASHINGTON, D.C., January 8, 2020—Today, Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) Federal Co-Chair Tim Thomas announced that Appalachia’s 13 governors have elected Ohio Governor Mike DeWine to serve as ARC’s states’ co-chair for 2020. The Appalachian Regional Commission's structure designates Local Development Districts in each state to have a meaningful role in establishing the priorities and implementing regulations associated with the funds. “Governor DeWine has made Appalachian Ohio a focus of his administration, and I applaud the collaborative approach he has taken to his work with ARC to benefit Ohioans. The Appalachian Regional Commissionwas formed in 1965 to aid economic development in the Appalachian region, which was lagging far behind the rest of the nation on most economic indicators. Local participation is provided through multi-county Local Development Districts, including four Local Development Districts in Ohio.Each year, the Appalachian Regional Commission provides funding for several hundred projects in the federal Appalachian Region, in areas such as business development, education and job training, telecommunications, infrastructure, community development, housing, and transportation.
