Nicholas and I hiked the Franconia Ridge Loop during Columbus Day Weekend. This Franconia Ridge hike sees up to 700 hikers a day… But the Old Bridle Path is a more gradual climb up to the top and I found it to be easier going down the incredibly steep Falling Waters rather than up. Great views.By the time we got to the top, walked around, we realized we were hungry and that by the time we got down it would be quite late. The hike is 8.8 miles and usually takes 7-1/2 to 8 hours. Beginning on the Old Bridle Path, you will ascend to Greenleaf Hut (4,200 feet) in 2.7 miles. Lafayette loop hike is rated as difficult and for good reason. Anything but!I base my USA vacation on locations of water/waterfalls. After falling in love with Franconia Ridge in August (2016), we decided to drive up again in the middle of October, the same year, to see the fall colors! The Franconia Ridge Loop hike in Franconia Notch is a gorgeous 8.5 mile loop that takes you over four mountains including two AMC 4000 footers. The Franconia Ridge Loop — the nine-mile, seven-hour Franconia Ridge hike that traverses Mount Lafayette, Mount Lincoln, and Little Haystack, along the second-highest range of peaks in the White Mountains — is arguably one of the most popular and best hikes New England has to offer, with breathtaking views in the White Mountains. This was our second time making the sleepless drive up to New Hampshire to start in the dark in the hopes to summit for sunrise! There were a lot of people on trail, especially when coming down from Mount Lafayette (we had to keep pulling over to the side to let faster hikers pass). Everyone tells you to hike up Falling Waters first because of the beautiful waterfalls and steep climb (it could be difficult and slippery going down.)

The entire loop is just shy of 9 miles and can take anywhere from 5 to 10 hours depending on speed, picture breaks, and whether or not you stop at the summits/hut. The scenery changes, with a different beauty each season.
It has some...PRO TIP: Call me crazy, but if you are doing the full loop, hike Old Bridle Path BEFORE Falling Waters Trail. We took gorgeous photos with no straggling people in the background.
Although you can do the hike any time of the year, the best time to hike the Franconia Ridge Loop is from late May to September.
