Andrews Bald was named for Andres Thompson, a cattle herder who brought his bovine here to munch on the grass in the 1840s. I have been there as late as July 4th week and have seen the azalea's in bloom, but on the down side of the bloom.I agree with the advice to definitely do Gregory Bald first and if you get back in time, you can do Abrams Falls.There is a small % of people who would do both of those in one day, but if you are in that kind of shape and have that much enthusiasm, then it is certainly possible and go for it.Thanks for the reassuring update.
A ndrews Bald is the highest bald in the Smokies, standing just under 6,000 feet. A Day with the Azaleas at Andrews Bald – A Photo Essay. Physically active children 7 years and older are invited to participate in this adventure. If you make it up there and back and have enough time for another hike, then go on to Abrams. Sounds like you're good to go!I guess I'd agree with a couple of posts above that if you want to do Gregory and Abrams Falls in the same day, that Gregory should be first.

Friday, June 16, 2017 from 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM EDT,Clingmans Dome Parking Area - Forney Ridge Trail.Considered to be one of the most magnificent sights in the Smokies, the iconic Flame Azeleas will be in bloom atop Andrews Bald during this hike with naturalist Liz Domingue.When you hike the Forney Ridge Trail, you encounter some of the best views the Smokies have to offer, including beautiful Fontana Lake! Probably not many places in the country are for that matter.Looking back at your earlier post about Gregory, I see where I gave you the vital statistics on that Gregory Ridge hike. If you are like me, I can get easily distracted on the trails. I would like to see the Azelas in bloom, nice views, and to take photographs.My only concern is I need to fit one of these hikes in the same day as I visit.Andrews Bald is a much shorter easier hike - yes folks, easier - but it's absolutely no competition to Gregory at azalea time.
Mitchell, the Pisgah range, snowbirds and lake fontana.So hiking toughness Gregory in my opinion wins.But for overall beauty and the viewshed, Andrews wins and it does so with less effort.On the other hand Gregory Bald is obviously near Cades Cove, but I agree that seems like an all-day event for most people..Obviously the big decision is how strenuous you want your extra hike to be.
One like SMokieshiker said, Andrews is a cake walk hike compared to Gregory.

Just before entering the bald, you'll detect a whiff of Christmas greenery!The hike to Andrews Bald is about 3.6 miles round trip, considered moderate by most, with the elevation gain on the way back to the parking lot. There is just to much to try and take in, so some trails have taken alot longer than I planned. Andrews Bald Azaleas - A Youth Friendly Event Considered to be one of the most magnificent sights in the Smokies, the iconic Flame Azeleas will be in bloom atop Andrews Bald … Gregory will be at least a half day dedicated to hiking.As far as foilage goes they are both lovely places and flame azaleias go, both have spectacular displays of the native beauty.Andrews has a killer view of the NC side of the Smokies and on a clear day you can see up to Mt. Parts of Alum Cave can be steeper because it is such a rocky trail that often turns into a creek...However, Andrews is a cool easy ridge top hike along the Forney Ridge Trail and you get great views and the flowers too.This summer we are going to Gregory Bald my kids are old enough now to make the hike.The flame azaleas typically bloom from about late May through June.
I was wondering what the big difference between Andrews Bald and Gregory Bald are. Even with June's extra daylight, that won't leave a lot of time for checking out Cades Cove *and* hiking to Abrams Falls. Unless you're a really strong hiker, you can plan on at least 6 hours on the trail plus another hour on top enjoying the azaleas and the view. Sounds more like a 2-day agenda to me; maybe do Gregory on day one and then see if you feel frisky enough for Abrams Falls on day two.Speaking of frisky, pardon me, but I'm feeling just a little bit nervous about recommending Gregory Ridge trail to you without knowing about your hiking ability. the steeper the trail the more maintenance and water issues you have.
